This photo was taken during the 1989 Hawaii Ironman… now known as IronWar. Mark had just surged ahead from me on the back side of Palani Hill with less than 2 miles to go.
Although it was a moment of anxiety and despair for me, I was still thinking there was a remote chance that I could catch him on Alii Drive.
This memorable race is still discussed today and provides me with a constant reminder of my 2nd place. I don’t really mind, though, because I know that I never gave up.
Put forth your best effort to the very end, even if you don’t get the result you wanted. Years later, you’ll take pride in the memory of your unflagging commitment.
